We arrived earlier than booking time, customer service asked us coming back at designated time but no need to queue. When we came back, all lines were occupied, but the one serving us before, trying his best by using other computer to process our part. Excellent service.

Most of downtown parking in UK require payment. It would be better to prepare some coins because all of them are paid at machines.
If you want to save money in parking, you can locate a big supermarket at the town, which normally has big car parks. However, it may need more walking to your destinations.
A lot of towns have park and ride service, ie you can park the car free (normally located at the border of the town). Then, you can pay a few pounds for a return ticket. In this case, you have the whole day to walk around the town without worrying the length of parking.
